Fu Manchu - We Must Obey
I always thought I knew Fu Manchu. I believe we had a Fu Manchu poster hanging in our old rehearsal room. Maybe that’s why I expected some Propaghandi like punkrock band. Well, I got that wrong.
This Southern California quartet has been rocking for years now. And with the release of We Must Obey, which is already their 10th record, they prove they’re not done yet! I was told that this is their toughest release so far. No doubt about that. This record launches off like an ass on fire!
The opening track ‘We Must Obey’ puts down the sound that stays equal for the rest of the record. And that’s rock and roll, stoner, surfpunk and overall rocking. Is that strange? Forget about all that and think of a raw, loud and a bit of a nasty sound.
With We Must Obey Fu Manchu fills up 36 minutes with 11 songs. After listening to this record I needed to relax a bit. I do like stoner rock but it’s always so loud. At least, this is. And with loud I mean heavy low pumping basses and over distorted amplifiers.
Overall it’s a good record. From the first song you’ll know what to expect. No surprises. But one thing is just too bad. They did almost every solo with wah-wah. And that is, in my eyes, cliché for stoner music. But hell, it rocks!
